Glittering is so transparent

I admit it. I’m a hoarder of Stampington magazines. I have them in racks everywhere with sticky notes sticking up from the tops and sides, marking techniques I have yet to try. Finally, I can mark one of those techniques off!

One of the articles that caught my eye in the Apr/May 2010 of The Stamper’s Sampler issue is titled “Beautiful Brayering.” I took the general idea of the technique and changed it up to see if it would work with transparent Art Glitter – and it did!

The artist originally did some masking using clear embossing powder and then brayered over the design with ink.

Here’s how to recreate:

Get out a favorite stamp to use as mask (you want it big enough to make it easy to cut out). I used my brand-new Fred Mullet Big Distress Wild Raspberry stamp (looked like a Fall leaf to me). Tear a page from an old book; gather some pigment inks, cardstock, clear embossing powder, a Xyron Creative Station, Art Glitter Petrified Microfine Transparent glitter and a package of Finesse Swirls Pearls – LeCreme from Want2Scrap.

Begin by stamping three leaf images on white, heavy-weight cardstock and cut them out (these are the masks).

Run them through the Xyron Creative Station with repositionable adhesive, remove the protective cellophane and use a stylus to outline each image.

Randomly apply inks to old book page (these colors will show beneath the masked images); heat set and cool before next step.  Ink the stamp with pigment ink and stamp onto colored book page, spoon on clear embossing powder and heat set.

Place leaf masks on top of clear embossed images then run the entire piece through Xyron Creative Station with permanent adhesive, facedown.

Remove protective cellophane covering, flip face-down on table and outline each leaf image (this ensures a clean and neat removal). The book page is very delicate and parts may tear away – I happen to like that look so chose not to repair it. Gently remove the masks, pace page in a bead tray and spoon on Art Glitter Petrified Microfine Transparent glitter; tap off excess.

Mount onto coordinated cardstock and add one Finesse Swirls Pearls – LeCreme to left side of matted card front. Edge each layer with a dark ink prior to assembly.

Stamp a sentiment on coordinating cardstock and mount with dimensional foam squares.

And there you have it! My version of a brayering technique, minus the brayer. Notice the words and color can be seen through the transparent glitter. That’s what I find so wonderful!
