GLAM GLITTERING DREAMWEAVER DRAGONFLY by Laura

Art Glitter and Dreamweaver Stencils

ARE TEAMING UP THE ENTIRE MONTH OF JUNE TO BRING YOU AN AMAZING CREATIVE COLLABORATION MIXING DREAMWEAVER STENCILS AND ART GLITTER. COME ALONG FOR THE RIDE...WE PROMISE IT WILL BE A SPARKLING ONE!

Hey folks! Today I have created a super glamorous, glittering dragonfly card for you. It is a new take (for me anyway) on the double glitter technique. The basic technique can be seen HERE.

First, I soaped up the back of the LM 193 Dragonfly Stencil and attached it to the double sided adhesive paper. Then, one of the new and exciting ideas--I used Dazzlers! I put D38 Blue Eyes Dazzlers on the wings and pressed it down with my fingers. I tried to keep it just on the wings, but was okay with the bits that migrated. I brushed off the excess rather vigorously with my large stencil brush. Because the Dazzlers are large pieces (flakes, in this case), they don't really cover the entire sticky surface. This allows finer glitter (Ultrafine and Microfine) to attach around the bigger pieces. I found this out completely by mistake. I knew that I wanted the feet and head of the dragonfly to be detailed, so I spilled a little of the Microfine 514 Bavarian Forest up near the head and upper body. While burnishing it (pushing it down with my finger), I accidentally got some on the upper wing section. It created beautiful definition! It looks like he had veining in his wings. His lower body contains a little extra sparkle with Chunky Opaque Hologram 255 Lunar Lake. When I removed him from the background, I used Ultrafine Transparent Crystal 85 on the revealed sticky surface.
The background was done very similarly. I used LJ 901 Mosaic Swirls. This time, I used the round D15 Sea Nymph Dazzlers first. I really pushed them down. In this case, I could actually see all of the spaces around the glitter chunks. Sea Nymph is a multicolor blend. I purposely chose a color already present to fill in the blanks. In this case, I used Ultrafine Opaque 48 Emerald. When I removed it from the backing, I used Ultrafine Transparent 85 Crystal again to fill in the background.

I was REALLY excited to share this technique with you. What makes it so special, you may wonder. Well, the look is very different. Dazzlers reflect light differently than Ultrafine or Microfine. Because of the larger surface, more light gets refracted and it creates an extremely flashy, glamorous look. I don't think the photos can accurately convey how eye catching this card really is. Give it a try yourself and see! During the Dreamweaver and Art Glitter Cross Promotion this month, you could win a great prize by just making and linking a card to the Dreamweaver Blog. Need further incentive? Ultrafine Glitter AND Dazzlers are on SALE! It is only $5.98 for a full one ounce jar. One ounce is really a lot of glitter! Get some and try this! You won't be sorry.

My new love affair with Dreamweaver Stencils, Acrylic Paint and Art Glitter!

I have been creating acrylic painted backgrounds sprinkled with Art Glitter for a few years now.  When I received my Dreamweaver stencils a few weeks ago I was very excited to see that they work well with acrylic paint. And my journey began…

Dreamweaver Stencil LX7007 Leaves with Acrylic Paint and Art Glitter. Left sample: Ultrafine Transparent #273 Cornsilk. Right: Microfine Transparent #744 Artic.

Things U Need
A thick watercolor paper
Acrylic/watercolor paintbrush
Palette, water cup, paper towels
Spray bottle filled w/ water
Acrylic Paint
Dreamweaver Stencils
Art Glitter Ultrafine: Transparent, Pearlescent, Opaque colors
Art Glitter Microfine: Transparent and Opaque colors
Spoon
Aluminum Turkey tray (optional)
Spray Lacquer

Start creating your background by cutting your paper slightly larger than your stencil. Wet your paper with a spray bottle or by dripping water onto paper with paintbrush until it is pretty saturated. You will notice I work inside a large aluminum tray. You may have a favorite way to paint without a tray, but all I can say is…it is so much easier and cleaner!

Paint on your colors till satisfied. I try not to work over this part, keep it simple, let the water and colors mix on the paper. Keep your paint wet and not too thick, but not too wet. Dab up excess water with paper towel and go back with a little more paint. If too wet, the glitter will not stick, same with ‘too dry’, your proverbial ‘just right’ Miss Goldilocks please!

I knew I had hit ‘just right’ when I would lay down the stencil, push in the center and the paper would cling to it with just a small amount of paint squeezing up through the design.

Sprinkle on your glitter with a spoon. You can keep your coverage sparingly for a hit and miss look or cover the design completely. The thicker your glitter coverage, the more careful you will need to be when removing the stencil so excess doesn’t fall onto your design.

After carefully removing stencil set glitter/paint design aside carefully to dry. The stencil looks so cool with the paint on it, the other side with glitter on it looks neat too. But clean your stencil right away like good little crafters.

Clean your stencil by rubbing under hot water gently between your hands. If paint has dried, use rubbing alcohol (in a well ventilated area) or hand sanitizer (Purell seems to have the most alcohol in it) and rub gently on a flat surface with an old toothbrush. You don’t want to bend any precious parts!

Dreamweaver Stencil LJ896 Large Flourish. Left Sample has Art Glitter Ultrafine Pearlescent #178 Ducktail. Right: Ultrafine Transparent #273 Cornsilk.
You have a choice now. The first layer of glitter to hit your paint will stick well. But the top layers will shed. You can let the top layers come off or you can keep them in place by using Spray Lacquer. I suggest going ahead and using the Spray Lacquer, it gives more dimension to your design and you’ll be happier!

The Large Flourish design to the left is really thick. The one on the right has the glitter applied sparingly. Both look great!

Dreamweaver Stencil LG743 Stylized Dahlia with various Art Glitter Ultrafine Transparent colors.

I had a blast making several samples. And they have come in quite handy! I needed a couple of cards this week and these little works of art worked perfectly. Check out my blogbyemm.com post for more examples, step out photos and glitter love!

I made some very interesting 'mistakes' too. I'll try to make a post soon on blogbyemm with those happy blunders.

Just a little more Dreamweaver Stencil fun.

While I was toiling over my paint-stencil-glitter technique I had a brief brain blurp. I was thinking about how the soap repels the adhesive on sticky paper and I thought it might repel some spray adhesive. And it does, fairly well. For directions and more photos check my Easy Peasy Stencil - Spray Glue - Glitter Fun post on blogbyemm.com.

This swirled design from Dreamweaver Stencils is so fun and makes such an interesting pattern in glitter.  My original plan was to use it as a background, but when I was done with it, I couldn't bear to cover it up, so it became the focal for the card.
For this card I used:  Art Glitter (of course!) - Ultra Fine Pearlescent - #179 - Tang, Ultra Fine Transparent Neon - #241- Fresh Lime and #238 - Barbie's,  and Ultra Fine Opaque - #56 Pumpkin.
And Dreamweaver Stencil - #901 - Mosaic Swirls

After soaping the backside of my stencil and securing it to the sticky paper, I began with the Tang glitter.  I very small amounts on my spoon and spread then somewhat randomly following the pattern of the swirl.  I didn't want to completely cover the individual squares because I wanted my second color to share the spaces.  I then added the Fresh Lime - without shaking off the Tang first.  The Fresh lime went only into the round swirls - not the "background" sections.  At this point I very carefully, but quickly flipped the stencil over and tapping onto a clean piece of card stock to remover the excess glitter.  If you do this quick enough, the green won't "bleed" into the background areas.  (not too much anyway)  Since the excess glitter is a mix of Tang and Fresh Lime, I put it into its own container to use for a future project.  I then came back and filled in the remaining background sections with Barbie's pink glitter.    After tapping off the excess pink glitter, I removed the stencil from the sticky paper.  Ta-da.....

Now, the final glittering step - I poured the Pumpkin glitter over the exposed sticky paper.  I really wasn't sure how the copper colored Pumpkin was going to look with these bright neon colors, but I was really happy with the results.  That is the fun part of playing with these glitters....you never know how its going to turn out until you try it!

To finish the card I added a copper and gold ribbon and a copper bow.  I then attached it to lime and rust colored card stock.

Be sure to visit my blog for more double glittered fun!  Today's blog features this same stencil but a totally different application!!

 Supply List:

100% Natural Soap (DHHS)
Dreamweaver Stencil LL587 Nest Flourish
Harlequin stamp (unknown)
Pumice Stone, Chipped Sapphire, Vintage Photo & Walnut Stain, Ranger Distress Inks
Ribbons, May Arts (my stash)

Well, to say I’ve been having fun with Art Glitter while on this design team is an understatement! I’m really enjoying the challenge of working this product into my style because my projects tend to be more organic and earth tone in color – not all shiny and bright!

This month we’re cross-promoting with Dreamweaver Stencils so you’ll see some really cool glittered designs using Dreamweaver Stencils from the team. I selected my stencil designs and when they arrived I wondered what the heck I was going to do with them – that’s where the challenge comes in. Makes you think.

Here’s what and I made and how to get this look using Art Glitter’s Double-Glitter Technique:

Soap up the backside of Dreamweaver Stencil (LL587) and place it on a piece of Double-Sided Mounting Paper from Art Glitter (MPDS). The trick here is to read the instructions. They tell you to mount it to a piece of cardstock that is larger; it can be trimmed later to a finished size. This is a very important step.

Mask off all the openings in the stencil using scrap paper and tape except the eggs. Sprinkle on Art Glitter’s Navy Ultrafine Opaque No. 27. Tap off excess and carefully removed the masking.

Leaving the stencil on the paper, hold it at an angle and waterfall Art Glitter’s Goldenrod Ultrafine Transparent Glitter No. 305 over the holes in the stencil design. Tap off excess and place your design stencil-side down on the table. Carefully peel the glittered cardstock off the stencil, making sure the stencil remains flat on the table.

When your stencil is free your background paper is open and sticky. This is when you waterfall Art Glitter’s Dreams Ultrafine Transparent Glitter No. 364 over the paper; tap off excess and your glittered design reveals itself –very pretty!
I did all of this thinking I’d make a card but it just wouldn’t come together. After wasting an hour on that failed attempt I went to bed. About an hour later it came to me – a tag! I resisted the urge to get up and jot down notes.

The next morning I set to work inking and distressing a tag, attached the glittered element, punched the bottom edge, used a version of the faux lace technique on Art Glitter’s Sticky Strips at the top and bottom of the glittered element, stamped a sentiment and ... it still wasn’t working. I hated it; scratch that and start over.

I salvaged the glittered element by cutting it off the tag; I was not going to give that bird’s nest up! This time I inked a tag using an ink applicator with Ranger’s Pumice Stone Distress Ink and then Chipped Sapphire Distress Ink (light hand on this color); spritzed a mixture of water and Ranger’s Heirloom Gold Perfect Pearls on the tag and let the colors dance around a bit before drying with a heat tool.

Next I took a very old harlequin rubber stamp inked with Chipped Sapphire and stamped partially on the tag. Inked Penny Black’s Letter Background (1999L) rubber stamp with Pumice Stone and stamped the entire tag. Then I edged the tag using an ink applicator and Vintage Photo Distress Ink followed by Walnut Stain Distress Ink. Then, I spritzed very lightly with the shimmer mist concoction again allowing the colors to dance and bleed slightly; heat set to stop the process. I loved it! It shimmered and the colors were perfect.

All that’s left is to assemble and embellish! To tone down the brightness of the glitter I decided to try a little Vintage Photo Distress Ink on it and it turned out great. I used Designer Dries Clear, with the fine tip, to attach my glittered element rescued from tag No. 1. Cut out the words ‘create’ and ‘life’ (felt those were appropriate with the eggs and nest), outlined them with a fine-tip black marker and inked slightly with Pumice Distress Ink. Glued in place and adhered the bird charm all with Designer Dries Clear. Ribbons are from my stash but the gold is dyed using Scattered Straw Distress Ink pad.

I love the fact the glitter toned down so nicely with a touch of Distress Ink. Give this a try and let me know how it worked for you; I appreciate your comments.

What you will need:
Dreamweaver Stencil LJ 849 Bare Trees
100% Natural Soap
Glitter, #129 Nova Ultrafine Opaque Hologram and #85 Crystal Ultrafine Transparent
Adhesive paper
Cardstock
Brayer (to push the stencil down)
Brush (for brushing off the excess soap)

To start, I rubbed the back of the stencil with the soap and covered all the details of the stencil. I then brushed out the cracks that collected any of the soap. Make sure the stencil is covered well or it may stick to the adhesive.
I attached the adhesive paper to cardstock and peeled back the adhesive.
Using the brayer I rubbed the stencil onto the adhesive paper.  If you have not covered your stencil well with soap the pressure of the brayer could make it stick too firmly.
First, I poured on the The Ultrafine Opaque Hologram Glitter in #129. I rubbed it in with my fingers, tapped off the excess glitter and put it back into the container. Then I flipped the stencil over so it was face down, and carefully peeled the paper off the stencil.
I removed the stencil and then poured Ultrafine transparent Glitter in #85 Crystal over the entire piece, shook it off and mounted it onto a card.
I love how this card turned out. It reminds me of the cabin. The snow glitters off the trees in the winter, and the moons glitters off in the trees in the summer. It is truly a beautiful scene

Here is a close up of the glitter. The hologram glitter in person is amazing, and I hope you all have experienced it. If not, I recommend you try some out. If you are a girly glitter lover, I know that it will not let you down! It sparkles, oh does it sparkle.
