I was only going to make one of these pieces, but it was so fun that I made four!
The first thing I did was watch the Youtube video on double glittering. I suggest you watch it, too. It gives some great pointers!
I then decided what I was going to use to make these layered art cards. You could use photocopies of vintage postcards, pictures of your kids, old family photos etc. I decided to use some digitally manipulated vintage postcard art that I already had (and I sell them, too, for 70 cents each!) featuring vintage pictures of turn of the century British actresses, which I even did a little research on.



What you'll need:

1. Dreamweavers Stencils
2. A bit of soap (all natural is best... you'll need something soft. They explain this in the Youtube video!).
3. 8 1/2" x 11" colored cardstock paper.
4. Sticky paper... either double sided, as shown in the Youtube video, or you can use single sided sticky paper and glue the non-sticky side down (as I did).
5. Some pictures, postcards or other art that you are willing to cut up! I used 2 of each postcard to create layers.
6. Lots and lots of Art Institute Glitter!
7. Art Institute Designer Dries Clear Glue
8. Scissors
9. Any other embellishments you might want to use. I used some tulle netting, for example.

I started by cutting my 8 1/2" x 11" pieces of cardstock in half and then gluing down the non-sticky side of the label sticky paper.



I then figured out which stencil and paper color I was going to use with the first postcard. I went with Dreamweavers Stencil #LX7010 Flower Quatrefoil.



Then, use your little bar of soap to soap the back of the stencil, so it will lift off the sticky paper easily.



Remove the backing on your sticky paper, put your stencil down, soap side down, and start your glittering! I wanted to use a few colors of glitter on this stencil, so I started with Art Glitter #623 Rosebud fine glass glitter.



Notice how I just put in the first color in the middle of the flower petals



Not too much strategy here, except I avoided the middle circle. I then removed the first color and tapped the back of the card to get the excess glitter off.



Then I added the next color which is a darker pink than the first, Art Glitter #616 Primrose fine glass glitter. Remember to remove the excess glitter and tap the back.



I then added the next color, Art Glitter #601 Royal Rose fine glass glitter. Remember to remove the excess glitter and tap the back.



So, here's what it looks like with the 3 pink glitter colors on.



I then added Art Glitter #618 Peapod green fine glass glitter to the centers only. Remember to remove the excess and tap off.



I then carefully removed the paper from the stencil and voila! This is what you have left!



The last color I put on is this #77 Pewter Opaque Ultrafine glitter.



After lots of cutting, gluing, layering and outlining in black glitter... that is what the final piece looked like!



So, moving to card #2, I chose the large stripes "Plaid" Dreamweaver Stencils #LX7002.



Soap up the back of your stencil, remove the backing of your sticky paper and put your stencil down. I then decided to rotate the stencil sideways, to get a candy stripe. The corners will be covered with other stuff, so I'm not too worried if they are "blank" or not perfect.



I used scotch tape to section off one part of the stripe that I wanted to be pink. I used Art Glitter #623 Rosebud fine glass glitter.



It's not perfect, and that's okay!



I then added Art Glitter #618 Peapod green fine glass glitter to the bottom stripe and silver glitter to the top stripe.



Here's what it looks like when you remove the paper from the stencil!



Here is #2 all finished!



I then went on to postcard #3. I used Dreamweaver Stencils #LJ882 "Diamond Grid" and several different kinds of glitter. I'm going to attempt to make a leaded glass window with a sunset in the background using only glitter. Pretty fancy, huh!



Here are the Art Glitter glitter colors I used, with links, starting from the bottom:

1. #46 Summertree Ultrafine Opaque Glitter
2. #618 Peapod green fine glass glitter
3. #141 Magenta Ultrafine Transparent Glitter
4. #322 Paris Ultrafine Transparent Glitter
5. #130 Eclipse Ultrafine Opaque Hologram Glitter
6. #D10 Gypsy Dazzlers
7. #904 Blue Topaz shard glass glitter
8. #270 Chesapeake Ultrafine Transparent Glitter
9. #24 Royal Wink Ultrafine Opaque Glitter

I then removed the paper from the stencil, and added the leaded glass color, #77 Pewter Opaque Ultrafine glitter.



I went over just a few parts of the glass and the border with glue and then added #79 Black Opaque Ultrafine glitter. I also used #901 Krystallos Clear Shard Glass Glitter on 3 of the "panes" to make it look like there is a clear glass reflection in one area. It's all about layering colors!



And here is the finished piece!



And finally, I started piece #4. I used Dreamweaver Stencils' #LX7001 Damask.



I started with #79 Black Opaque Ultrafine glitter.



I then spooned in a little silver glitter for some shading, #83 Silver Opaque Ultrafine, tapped that off and put clear glitter #89 Martini Transparent Ultrafine over that.



And here is #4 done!




Here are all the finished pieces with grommets and ribbon in them. Ready for gift giving or hanging!

I would like to share a few photos with you showing how I used Art Glitter and Dreamweaver Stencils to create a pretty wedding card. I won't go into a lot of detail....you can watch the video for all of the "how to's". :)

I first sprinkled #319 Princess  in the flower centers, and #360 Pretty Pink around the outer petals. I then used my finger to rub the glitter into the self adhesive paper.

I used #114 Leaf glitter on the foliage and rubbed it in.

After tapping off the loose glitter and pealing the paper from the stencil from the stencil, I sprinkled the entire piece with #85 Crystal and rubbed it into the adhesive.

I used the same stencil to emboss the front panel of my card. 

I added a coordinating piece of colored cardstock, a stamp,  and a simple bow, and voila!

So, here is my post:

WHY CHOOSE MICROFINE?

First, let me get one thing straight: I love all Art Institute Glitter. From hologram to transparent, and microfine to vintage glass shards, I think it is all wonderful. I do believe, however, that every job requires the right glitter choices. With all of the fantastic glitter choices, it is hard to decide what the right glitter is. Today, I am going to discuss microfine versus ultrafine.

 

 

So, here I have two very similar wedding cards (following this month's challenge theme). I used the LJ 907 Damask Stencil and the LS 22 Congratulations Stencils. They were both done using the exact same Double Glitter Technique on the same Dreamweaver Double Sided Adhesive Paper and with the same cardstock on the background. The clear glitter I used was also the same: Ultrafine Transparent #85 Crystal. The major difference is in the purple color. For the card on the left, I used Microfine Opaque #527 New Wine. The card on the right had Ultrafine Opaque #356 Grape Nectar. I tried for the same colors, and, indeed, in the containers they look almost identical. I had forgotten, however, about one of the important features of the microfine glitters. They are more finely ground (hence the higher price), and have a difference in the reflective surfaces. They are a little more subdued (almost vintage) and photograph much darker than the coarser ultrafine glitter. So, in all of these pictures, the microfine will appear darker than the ultrafine. Have you noticed the other major difference yet? If not, perhaps the next picture will help.

 

Here is a closeup of the two different cards. Can you see all the details? The damask stencil has tons of detail. The image on the left, done in ultrafine, shows quite a bit of it. The image on the right is made with the microfine. Can you see how crisp the edges are? That is the microfine difference.

Here is the detail on the words. Can you tell which one was made with the microfine glitter? That is right, the bottom one. It has much crisper edges and better detail.

Back to my original question: Why use microfine? It is much finer ground (make sure to rub it in with your fingers to get complete coverage). When you need crisp details or a lovely, vintage look, microfine is the right choice in glitter.

This was my first attempt at the Double Glitter Technique. I read the instructions and watched the video and could wait to give it a whirl.




I used: Dreamweaver Stencil #LJ 886 Fireworks
Art Glitter Ultrafine Opaque Glitters: # 324 - Country Red & #157 - Purple Lame (Link:
Art Glitter Ultrafine Pearlescent #179 - Tang
Art Glitter Ultrafine Transparent #85 - Crystal
Art Glitter Designer Dries Clear Adhesive

I started by soaping the back of the stencil and sticking the stencil to the sticky paper. (soaped side down) Then I used my tape roller to attach the sticky paper to a piece of cardstock for stability. I wanted the fireworks to pop in different colors, so I used painter's tape and scraps of paper to mask off the area that I did not want to glitter - leaving one of the fire bursts showing.



I covered this exposed area with Country Red Ultra Fine Opaque Glitter.



After tapping it gently into the stencil, I tapped off all the excess glitter to reveal my first firework burst. Piece of cake!

I repeated this process for each of the fire bursts. Once the two red ones were done, I didn't worry too much about masking over them when I did the gold (Tang) or white (Crystal) because the sticky paper was no longer exposed and I knew the glitter would not stick in those areas.





Once all the fireworks had been completed, I carefully removed the stencil and covered the exposed sticky paper with Purple Lame Ultra Fine Opaque Glitter.




After shaking all of the excess glitter, this was my results:

I was happy with the clarity of the design, but I really wanted the red to pop more. The Red & Blue were both deep colors and both opaque glitters, so there wasn't enough contrast to allow the red to stand out, so I decided to add a little more dimension. I used Designer Dries Clear Adhesive and a fine tip to trace over the red fireworks and then added more red glitter.



I finished the card by attaching the glittered design to layered silver and red metallic card stock. A glittering Red White & Blue card for the 4th of July!
