Fantasy Film Melted over Dreamweaver Stencil Technique is much fun! Of course melting Fantasy Film is always fun!

This is the first thing I thought of when we learned of our partnership with Dreamweaver stencils. I had a couple in my stash already and immediately started burning film with them. I don't know why it didn't occur to me before!

Things U Need
Art Glitter Fantasy Film, any color
Dreamweaver Stencil
Tape
Awl
Material to poke into
needle nose pliers (2 if possible)
candle
patience

First let's talk about the right stencil design for this technique. You will want a design that does not have tiny details in it. You will not get an exact interpretation of your stencil design. Something with with small open areas, but not thin lines works pretty well. Abstract designs are perfect too!

Tape one layer of Fantasy Film onto your stencil. Make sure film does not fold over to other side, you do not want to spend hours peeling little pieces of bonded film off your stencil later, just one simple layer. (Not that I may have done that...) Place stencil side up on some material. Using your awl, make little punctures in each little area, creating an air vent for your candle flame to go through. Move quickly through design, it almost doesn't matter where the hole is.

Turn stencil over with film side on top. Hold over candle flame (a breezeless environment is best), with pliers, stencil will get hot. Move stencil/film up and down towards flame until holes begin to form. Resist the temptation to burn it all away! Move around design until your piece is pleasing to you.

Dreamweaver Stencil: LX7014 Daisy Background and Art Glitter Fantasy Film: Strawberry

Set aside and let cool, about 1 minute. Pull tape off and now you have a multicolored background or focal piece for your next project. There will be residual soot left on your stencil as seen above. It washes off easily with soap and water, but will stay on film.

Here's an example of an open design with lots of stippling to facilitate the heat.

Pretty cool, but photo does not do this example justice, the reflection shows a shimmering multi-colored star in the middle. I've started a little collage piece with the example above, I'll have the finished piece soon on my blog.

I must make a quick statement. I have to admit, I have really put my Dreamweaver stencils through a lot of abuse and they have held up beautifully with a little TLC. I'm very happy and very impressed with Dreamweaver products. Enjoy!  ~emm

Gala Glitzy Trees by Laura Fraedrich

This is the best time of year to stock up on supplies for next year’s holiday projects. I scored these funky wooden trees for about 70% off last year during the local craft store’s Christmas clearance sale. I didn’t know what I was going to do with them at the time, but I knew I’d turn them into something special eventually. An idea popped into my head when I came across them this year in my craft supply closet. It only took a few scrapbooking supplies and some Gala Glitz from the Art Glitter Institute (which, by the way, is my favorite product of theirs) to give these clearance items a new life!

Supplies Needed:

Wooden trees - mine came painted white already, but if yours didn’t, paint them using acrylic paints and let dry.
Two sizes of circle paper punches
Miscellaneous scrapbook paper
Collage medium (I used Collage Pauge)
1” sponge brush
Craft Glue (I used Tacky Glue)
Assorted sizes and colors of plastic buttons (about 20)
Designer Dries Clear adhesive
Gala Glitz in assorted colors (I used red, teal and lavender blue)
Assorted fibers or yarn
Small wooden blocks in various sizes
Ribbon

Instructions:

Punch out two sizes of circles out of your scrapbook papers. Cut out enough to cover most of the tree, leaving little bits of white showing through.

Using the sponge brush, apply a thin layer of collage medium to the tree and lay on the circles. Let dry, then repeat, adding more circles on another layer. When you are satisfied with your circles, apply one last layer of collage medium to seal.

Take the buttons and apply Designer Dries Clear adhesive to their centers, then sprinkle with Gala Glitz. Let dry. Leave some of the buttons plain.

Adhere the buttons randomly on the tree with craft adhesive. Use the largest buttons for the tree toppers.

Wrap several wooden blocks in scrapbook papers and glue into place with craft glue. Wrap ribbons around them and top with one or two tiny plastic buttons. Glue them to the base of the tree (if your tree came with a base).

Wrap a strand of fibers or yarn around the tree and adhere at both ends with a drop of craft glue.

Encaustic Glitter Fun by Emily M. Miller

Oh have I been having fun! I just returned from Art Unraveled in Phoenix, Arizona and I learned some new exciting tricks I want to show you! This post covers the Encaustic Rusted Play class I took with an extremely talented instructor Patricia Baldwin Seggebrush, creator of Encaustikits.com. It was pure fun!

For those of you not familiar with Encaustic Painting, please let me quote Wikipedia: "Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid/paste is then applied to a surface—usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are often used..." Of course I added Art Glitter products!


This example uses a Fantasy Film and Fiber piece I stamped ahead with Barbara's Spring Moth stamp (my favorite stamp!). I started with a nice layer of wax and pushed my image into it while it was still hot. The image was not cut out so it had unfused edges of film and fiber sticking up that I promptly heated with a heat tool to get some interesting colors going. Then I added another layer of wax and heated it again. This time I sprinkled on some Art Glitter Ultrafine Transparent #171 Gelina with my fingers and heated it again til it spread around in a fun way! This piece is only about 5 inches wide, so I think I will use it in a collage piece later.


This guy is pretty straight forward. Again I used a pre-stamped Fantasy Film Dragonfly. This was one that I had molded over a candle flame and it was kind of beat up on it's own, but embedded in the wax it takes on a new life! You'll also notice some squares and stars from our Dazzler line sparkling in the background.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I forgot to take some pure, unfused Fantasy Film and Fiber with me, which would have been MORE fun than I can imagine. So I'll just have to show you those experiments later when I get them made.


This encaustic painting again is just pure fun! I used lace for a stencil for the red wax and smashed in some Vintage Glass Glitter, Glass Beads and Ultrafine Glitter. It was a sort of a kitchen sink concoction I came up with after glittering some adult size wings a few years back. This one is completely unfinished, I may add more wax, may not, but it will definitely become the beginning of another collage.

Boxes of Boxes Birthday Present from Connie K.

Can you keep a secret?????

This is my third project for art glitter..but it is two fold...it is also a birthday gift for my girlfriend Polly...so shhhhh....don’t tell...her birthday is a few weeks away!


A few months ago I attended a workshop with Tim Holz...it was fabulous...of course...inky, eclectic, funky over the top fun...we made a curious curio cabinet...I knew immediately that I would want to make more of these...My head was spinning with the possibilities!

Polly loves all things vintage and birdies...so I had to include those two elements in her gift...I just know she is going to love it...

I used the the idea-ology configurations..if you haven’t seen them...well, they are basically boxes of boxes...so clever. I covered them with paper from 7 gypsies conservatory line.

The feet on the box are also from idea-ology...I love these..they are just so fun...actually I think they are kinda sexy....like little stilettos!


I also included a little glass knob on the top...

These are the supplies I used...you could change it up easily with what you may have at home...

You will want to arrange the boxes to your liking...I covered the inside...backside, two sides & bottom...then taped the edges with the tissue tape. No need to cover the top inside it won’t show. I used a variety of paper and mixed it up a bit. The larger box with the bird has a few layered pieces that I adhered with with some foam tape. The feather in the upper right hand corner was cut from paper and adhered to a small wood block for some additional dimension...remember it is all about layering...

The bird was glittered with ART GLITTER Mellow Yellow, Martini & True Blue using Designer Dries Clear Adhesive...she is setting in a nest made from reindeer moss. The eggs in the box in the center row were altered using alcohol inks...the color I used was pool... included in this box a small bottle with bird seed. Vintage children's blocks are used in the center with Polly’s intials...she is going to love this! And then next to that is the vintage spools...I just picked out a couple that had thread that would coordinate with the colors..


In the lower left hand corner is the glittered birdcage..I used ART GLITTER Vintage Glass Glitter #611 Antique Silver...I can not get enough of this...I use it on everything.
Love the texture it give the birdcage...I suspended this with a tiny little eye-screw and jump ring...

The next little box has a little battery operated tea light...I cover with more of the tissue tap and then inked it up...you will love how this looks...


And finally a big ole vintage button...


You can see the possibilites are only limited by your imagination..
The outside of the box was cover with more paper and tissue tape then distressed with black craft paint...once dry, I sealed it with matte medium. Attach the feet with a glue gun and added the bow to the knob.

I hope you enjoyed seeing Polly’s birthday gift...and remember to keep it s a secret for a few more days...

Sweet Happiness Sign by Cassandra Midkiff

One of my favorite pieces to create are these altered signs with inspiring words on them. For this project I decided to go with "sweet, happiness." I found these chipboard words at Michaels in the dollar bin and knew I had to work them into some of my projects.

Directions:
I always start by gluing my scrapbook paper to the board and aging the edges with my brown ink pad. Next I drill my holes where I want to place my wire for hanging. I put down a layer of the Designer Dries Clear Adhesive as wide as my chipboard word and then sprinkled the Faux Snow on top. I love layering I think it creates a lot of dimension to each piece. After the Faux Snow is dry I glue down the chipboard word. Because all of the lettering in happiness is different it gave me the idea to use a different color glitter on each letter. To do this I simply added my Designer Dries Clear Adhesive to each individual letter and added my glitter. It took a little time but I think the result is worth is!


After happiness was completly dry I added a few spots of #215 Wild Rose glitter surrounding it. Then I layered three scrapbook paper flowers to create a big beautiful flower. For each layer of the flower I added some glitter then glued it together with my Designer Dries Clear Adhesive. I also love to use the Dresden foil trim in my pieces (you can find this in several shops on etsy) and jewelry findings. I attached my wire to the holes I drilled, I like to play with the wire adding embelishments to it such as my forget me nots and plastic flower findings.

Finally you have a beautiful piece to hang up and enjoy. These are quite popular in my etsy shop jupiterdesigns.etsy.com.

Glittery Can Tab Gal by Laura Fraedrich

I have been using a lot of recycled materials in my artwork lately and found that nothing works better to shine up something old or used like glitter does. The following project does just that! All you have to do is start stealing all of your friend’s can tabs and you too can make this beautiful Glittery Can Tab Gal.

Materials needed:
1 stretched canvas (this one was 16x20 inches but you can use whatever size you want)
Modeling paste
Sand paper (optional)
Assorted acrylic, fabric (in a squeeze bottle) and/or Lumiere paints
Paintbrushes
Can tabs
2 doilies (I got mine at the dollar store)
Plastic cup with water
Muslin fabric (1/4 yard will do)
Extra fine black Sharpie and assorted colors of ink markers
Matte gel medium
Weldbond glue
Large eye needle and funky yarn (optional)
Feathers
Art Glitter Ultrafine Glitter
Art Glitter Clear Glass Beads
Art Glitter Designer Dries Clear Adhesive

Instructions:
Coat canvas with modeling paste and let dry. Applying it roughly will add texture to your final piece. When satisfied with your application, let dry completely. Sand texture down if desired.
Apply acrylic paints over the modeling paste in the colors and designs you choose. I applied a layer of Lumiere paints over the acrylic in certain areas (above her wings) to add extra sparkle. Let dry.

Meanwhile, you can start designing your ‘gal’. For the skirt, cut out a skirt shape that is appropriate for your canvas size out of the muslin. Using the needle and yarn, sew the can tabs onto the muslin like they are in the picture. There is no right or wrong way to do this as long as you attach both sides of the can tab hole to the fabric so they lay flat and you overlap the rows slightly. Alternate Method: if you aren’t much of a hand sewer, you can simply attach the can tabs with glue directly to the canvas. I would recommend using a strong adhesive such as Weldbond for this so that the tabs don’t come off.

Cut out head and shirt shapes from the muslin. Use an extra fine tip sharpie to draw the face and color the features in with ink markers. Paint the shirt with the acrylic and/or Lumiere paints of your choice.

Adhere the skirt, face, and shirt using matte gel medium. Use a paintbrush to apply an even coat of medium on the areas on the canvas where you want to attach the fabric pieces. Lay the pieces over the medium and press down lightly.

Add a small amount of acrylic paint to your plastic cup and water. Stir so it dissolves into a dye. Submerge your doilies into the dye and let dry. Cut them into wing shapes similar to the picture and adhere with gel medium. Let dry.

Embellish your ‘gal’ with feathers, fabric paint (used here for the hair) and glitter! I used clear Glass Beads and Ultrafine Opaque Purple Shadow for her sleeves and Vintage Glass Glitter in Thistle for the rest of her shirt.

Glitter Frog Collage by Laura Fraedrich

This project is my favorite glitter project I have done so far. Not only do I love making collages (I save every piece of paper and magazine picture I can get my hands on), I also loved doing the technique of ‘painting’ with glitter like I did here. I think you will love it too when you give it a try. Here’s how:

Supplies needed:

Assorted Glitter from Art Glitter Institute
Diamond Glaze (available from Judikins.com)
Designer Dries Clear Adhesive by Art Glitter Institute
Assorted art papers and/or images from magazines
7”x 11” piece of mat board
Matte medium
1” foam brush

First, lay out your magazine images and art papers on the piece of mat board the way you want them in your collage. You can cut them into smaller pieces with scissors or tear them for rougher edges. Once you are satisfied with your layout, start adhering them to the mat board using the matte medium and the foam brush. Make sure you coat the entire piece of paper with the medium, and after you lay it down on the board brush another layer of medium on top. You should overlap the pieces of paper slightly and make sure all of the mat board is covered and there is no board showing through. Let the collage dry thoroughly.

Next, choose the areas on your collage that you want to ‘paint’ over with glitter. In mine, I chose the frog and a couple of flowers. Choose glitter colors that match the color of the image you will be applying glitter over. Choose your first color and apply Designer Dries Clear adhesive over the entire area that you want that particular color of glitter to go on. Sprinkle the glitter over the wet glue and tap off the excess. Let dry for a few minutes. Repeat this process with the rest of the colors of glitter you want to apply until your image is completely ‘painted’.

To add some extra shine and texture, I chose a few leaves here and there and applied Diamond Glaze to them. Once it dries it looks raised and glossy and made the leaves look more realistic. You can choose to do the same to your collage, or add other elements that work for yours.
